Education Program

Data Annotation Training in Ukraine

Free online training for vulnerable groups in Ukraine. WeLabelData and Japan-based Baobab, supported by a United Nations feasibility study, provide practical image annotation skills that can lead to future work opportunities.

Free Training for Vulnerable Groups

A pilot data annotation program for people in Ukraine, focused on practical skills and realistic future work opportunities.

Why this program exists

Baobab received a grant from UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) to test whether remote data annotation training can create future work opportunities for vulnerable groups in Ukraine.

If this pilot is successful and the model is approved, the program may expand and include pathways to work. Participants of the pilot group will be prioritised in that scenario.

At this stage, this is a feasibility study. There is no guaranteed job and no stipend during training.

What data annotation is

Data annotation is the process of preparing data for artificial intelligence systems. In this training, typical tasks include:

  • viewing images on a computer screen
  • drawing a rectangle around an object
  • selecting the correct label

It does not require programming. It requires attention to detail, following instructions, and basic computer skills. This work can be done from home on a laptop.

What Participants Receive

Practical skills, training, and potential priority for future work.

Training & Support

  • Free training in image data annotation
  • Clear instructions and ongoing support
  • Live orientation session via Google Meet
  • Approximately 20 hours of self-paced training

Skills & Recognition

  • Certificate of completion
  • Hands-on experience with real annotation tools
  • Understanding of quality standards in AI projects
  • Skills that are currently in demand in the AI and ML ecosystem

Future Opportunities

If the project continues after the feasibility phase, participants from the first group will be prioritised for access to future opportunities in data annotation.

This pilot is a chance to be among the first people trained in this model and to help shape how it works for Ukraine.

How the Training Works

Two simple parts: live orientation + self-paced practice.

  1. Live Orientation (online)

A one-hour online session via Google Meet. The team explains the platform, tools, workflow, and answers questions. A recording will be available if someone cannot attend live.

  2. Self-Paced Training (~20 hours)

Participants complete image annotation tasks from home at their own pace. Materials are provided in Ukrainian and cover tools, quality standards, and detailed instructions.

  3. Certificate & Feedback

At the end of the training, participants receive a certificate of completion and can share feedback that will help shape future training-to-work pathways.

Requirements

  • Laptop or desktop computer (tablets such as iPad do not work)
  • Stable internet connection
  • Basic ability to use Google Meet
  • Willingness to spend around 20 hours on training

Who can apply

The program is designed for people living in Ukraine who belong to vulnerable categories, including:

  • people with disabilities
  • widowed individuals due to the war
  • single mothers
  • internally displaced people
  • women (in general)

It is not required to represent all categories. Several participants may come from the same category if they fit the criteria.

Who We Are

WeLabelData and Baobab work together to bring this pilot to Ukraine.

WeLabelData

WeLabelData is a Ukrainian-led company specialising in data annotation. We support Baobab in Ukraine through translation, communication, and local coordination.

Baobab

Baobab is a global data annotation company headquartered in Japan. They have delivered remote training and work opportunities to teams around the world, including Ukrainian refugees in Tokyo.

Baobab is recognised for high quality standards and continuous support systems. In this project, they lead the training content and methodology.

Important to Know

Clear expectations for everyone considering this program.

Is this training free?

+

Yes. This program is fully free for participants. It is funded as part of a feasibility study supported by the United Nations.

Is there payment or a guaranteed job?

+

There is no payment or stipend during training and no guaranteed job afterwards. The primary benefits are free training, skills, and potential priority for future opportunities if the model is approved.

What is the role of the United Nations?

+

The program is part of a feasibility study funded by UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization). Its purpose is to learn whether this training model can work in Ukraine and be scaled in the future.
